With summer right around the corner, and as a nod to the solar eclipse, who could resist creating sun-inspired ceramic wall pockets, wall hangings, and little catch-all dishes?

Wall pockets are hanging containers with one flat side that hugs the wall and has a puffed-out open pouch (think: kangaroo!) in front. They are three-dimensional and can provide a mini explosion of texture and color that will cheer up any room. These sunny ceramic pieces are attractive and functional; our wall pockets will be able to hold little plants, small school supplies, such as pencils and paper clips, even TV remotes, or other small items.

In week one of this 4-week session, students will learn basic ceramics safety, guidelines and skills, and work on their clay designs, using tools of the trade. Work will continue the second week as students learn how to properly seal the edges on their wall pockets, to prevent any leaks, should they decide to use them as hanging vases for plants. Students will also learn how to add textures and various techniques to embellish their projects.

In weeks two and three, once wall pockets are set aside to dry, we will work on shallow decorative dishes and other two-dimensional ceramic wall hangings. After bisque firing, in our fourth week students will delve into glazing, using dipping and hand painting techniques. Once the glaze firing is complete, students will be able to pick up their completed pieces at the arts center. All materials are supplied.

In this 4-week series, students will have the opportunity to try new techniques for creating various mixed media projects.

May 6 and 13. Explore 3-dimensional mixed media using fabric scraps and glue to create amazing fabric bowls.  Bowls will be designed and molded in the May 6 class, then allowed to dry. The following week, we will embellish and decorate the dried bowls with rope, string, buttons, shells, and other trim pieces.

May 20 and June 3. Our focus will be the soothing neurographic style of drawing and painting with alcohol markers and watercolor. Results are unique artistry that each student will bring to life in a style of their own.

All materials are supplied. Space is limited to six so please sign up early at Salmon River Fine Arts Center Square Site.
